Abstract

This study examined journalists’ perception of the usage of artificial intelligence in news production in Akwa Ibom State. The rapid growth of digital technologies has continued to reshape newsroom practices, making it necessary to understand how media professionals perceive and respond to AI tools. The study was anchored on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, which explained how performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions shaped individuals’ acceptance and actual use of technology. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 791 registered members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council. The sample size for the study was 259, determined using the Krecie and Morgan formula. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from selected respondents. The findings showed that most journalists were aware of AI tools and demonstrated a reasonable level of understanding of their functions in news production. The results also indicated that journalists generally perceived AI as beneficial for improving efficiency and productivity, although concerns about ethical issues and job security still existed. The study further revealed that journalists’ perception significantly influenced their acceptance and actual use of AI tools in newsroom activities. Based on these findings, the study concluded that positive perception, adequate knowledge, and institutional support were critical factors in promoting AI adoption in newsrooms. The study recommended that media organisations and professional bodies should provide regular training, establish clear ethical guidelines, and encourage supportive newsroom environments to strengthen responsible AI integration in news production.
